How do you go about deciding which web designer is right for you?

 

How do you decide if they are legitimate designers or just some kid with a computer?

 

Just about anyone with a computer, an internet connection, and a small amount of knowledge can call themselves a web designer these days. That means that you have to chose from a huge number of web designers and web design companies and try to find the right designer for you and your business.  It is critical that you get it right. A wrong decision now will not only effect your venture or business, but it may make you question whether your next idea or venture is worth the trouble or risk.

 

We have put together a few simple tips to help you chose the right designer for your website.

 

Does the designer have a website?

This may sound  a little odd, but some so-called designers do not even have their own website.

A legitimate designer should have they own website with examples of their previous work and clearly available contact details.

 

Does the designer have an email address?

This again may sound  a little odd, but if you find a designer that you are assessing has an email like designme@hotmail.com or pert356@gmail.com, this should ring a few alarm bells.

A legitimate designer will have a ‘professional’ email address.  In 99%  of case they should have an email that matches their website and business name.  Having the skills, assets and ability to have your own domain , email and hosting should be a necessary fundamental for any web designer.

Beware of the word - Free

It is entirely legitimate for a web designer to offer free elements in with their web design.  Free SEO, Free Domain Name etc

There are times however that you should be very wary of the word “Free”.

Free Website Builders – I have recently seen more and more “web designers” building websites for clients on “free website builders”.  These are websites that allow you to create a ‘free’ website, by using templates and online software. In this case you are being charged for a ‘free’ service, and also for a substandard service. Always ask you designer where and how they are building your site.

Free Hosting – This is very different from hosting included in a design package for ‘free’.  Free-Hosting is hosting without charge, and in most cases you get exactly what you pay for.  Overloaded hosting, unreliable hosting, or hosting the redirects your traffic and visitors to money making options for the host.

If your “designer” say that he/she can do your site cheaply because it is hosted for free, don’t be fooled.  Each of these businesses has to make their income somewhere, and giving away hosting for free is not a good business plan.  In a few words “Avoid Free-Hosting”
